This is a post to help any who has the following problem in 2003-2008? Saab 9-3 and potentially any other Saab with an SID:

Audio system stopped working, no sound for turn indicator, no door chimes, backlight on main LCD display will not turn off even when the key is removed. Everything else electrical in the car is fine (windows, locks, mirrors, headlights, taillights, indicators, etc).

I've seen several different posts online about similar problems and several of the responses indicated that an entire new audio system would be needed at a cost of up to $1200, but that may not be necessary at all. This happened to my 2003 Saab 9-3 and after much stress and frustration I was able to fix it within a minute's time. Here's what I did:

There are three fuse panels in my car, one under the hood, one in the trunk, and one on the drivers side of the dash. The third one is the one I used. Open the driver side door (in the UK open the passenger side door) on the side of the dash is a plastic cover which comes off with relative ease. Inside is the fuse panel.
Once you've located this, put your key in the ignition and turn it to "ON" but keep the engine off. Pull the fuse for the audio system (for mine it was slot #14, but it would worthwhile to check your owner's manual as they have it listed there) and then just put it back in. Mine sparked which makes sense since the car was powered on. Take out the key, then turn it back to "ON". Everything should work. If not, check the rest of the fuses for the audio system (in the trunk and in the engine bay). Maybe try the same thing for each of them. As you pull the fuses out check to make sure they aren't blown. Good luck!
