What you are experiencing is a classic indication that your battery has come to the end of it's useful life.It is not sudden failure but rather gradual deteriation .
Both of the instances you experienced followed you discharging the battery before trying a start. A normal battery would not have had an issue, but your battery plates are a combintation of sulfated and eroded.
More importantly jumping a car like a 9-3 is inherently dangerous for the numerous voltage sensitive devices in the car. Do not wait, get a new battery in your car. It is the least expensive solution to avoid some serious expenses.
If you are faced with a situation where a GOOD battery was discharged and you need a "jump" the safest way to do it is disconnect the positive terminal from the battery first. Then use the jumper cables to attach directly to the positive battery post and ground on the car. Then run the other car at advanced idle for a least 10 minutes. Then disconnect the jumpers, and reconnect the positive lead. Then start. If the battery is still discharged, repeat the procedure but allow alonger charge time. If that fails you really don't have a "GOOD" battery anyway and it should be replaced.
Finally automotive batteries are designed with thin plates to provide lots of starting current. But they are not tolerant of very many total discharges. If you experience a lot of running the battery down your battery service life will be cut down dramatically.
