While there is definitely some truth to that, any of the good independents like Anders of Swedecar in CA, or SaabTech in Chicago, Marty at The Meyer Garage in IA will have the Tech2 and security permissions software (either the older TIS2000 or AC Delco TechConnect package) which basically gives us indies the same diagnostic capability as the dealership.

Where the difference may lie is the fact that the dealer techs are constantly on the cusp of new problems cropping up with the newest models - cars that independents usually only start to see once the owner's warranty period is up. I'm just starting to get 2007 and 2008 models in at our shop, the techs at the dealer have been seeing them for nearly 3 years now.

It also may lie in the fact that the dealership might be able to get some of the pieces to do the substitute game easier, this will vary by independent. We have quite a collection of 9-3SS modules around, but definitely don't have one of everything yet, let alone one of every one that I know is good, I would put money that Swedecar does though.

That being said, our older customers come in all the time with the SPG's and 9000's with stories of how the people at the dealer asked them "what-kind-of-car-is-that" when the pull into the bay.

It's important to have a relationship with your mechanic, and to not be afraid to look for a new one if your relationship isn't working out - would you go to a doctor you didn't trust or couldn't ask questions to?

Best,
Drew
