Washing my car(s) in the winter is a real challenge. I used to wait for days when the temp was over 35 and I would drag out the hose and pull my car onto my front lawn (so as to not get my driveway iced over!) I would be washing one side of the car while the other was getting a thin coating of ice. My neighbors think I'm an obsessive nut (which I probably am.) I did this every year until this year. My car is absolutely filthy now, but with the promise of a 45 degree day on Friday, the hose will be coming out again, despite the 12" of snow that has been on my yard for the last month. In my older age, I can't deal with the sub 40 degree car washes any more. I would never use a brush car wash for the very reason you mention - swirl marks.
Incidentally, my father lived in St. Louis up until last year. He has since moved permanently to Lake of the Ozarks. He tells me the winters out there are nothing compared to New England.
