09 SC plastic silver tailgate trim won't stay put

My 09 Combi plastic silver tailgate trim (outside across the back with the SAAB emblem in the middle) keeps popping off. It appears to have a small clip that is supposed to 'snap' into a hole on the metal body. For the life of me I can't get it to stay snapped in.
The other side is firmly connected and I'm unable to pop it off to see how it's attached.
Does anyone know if the plastic clip anchors from inside the car? Should I explore removing the internal trunk paneling to correctly snap it in place?
Suggestions are welcome...
