We are told to always fix the U codes first. They indicate communication faults between modules. Swedecar is right that you also have to know which module the code came from as two different modules can have the same four digit code in their list of faults. Just FYI; P codes are Powertrain (engine and transmission and now transfer case). B codes are Body codes, C codes are Chassis codes (ABS, traction control, stability and tire pressure) and U codes are communication codes.
A bad ground could cause this. What I have seen is a battery spewing acid onto the wiring harness near the underhood fuse and relay panel. The harness may look fine, but the acid allows current to pass right through the insulation.
