I looked into utilizing the shark fin when I got my Sirius, but dealing with tearing down the headliner to get to it wasn't my idea of a fun afternoon.
I placed my antenna inside the rear shelf/dash between the felt and frame. Got the low profile antenna, and wedged it in through the underside of the dash in the trunk through one of the openings. It sits slightly behind the larger driver side speaker. The magnet sits directly on the steel frame so it gives it a good ground plane. And giving the signal has to go through the padding and felt of the rear dash plus the rear window (which is tinted pretty dark) I rarely have signal issues. I live in Maryland and about the only time I do have a signal issue is when I'm driving through thick woods heading West. I mainly placed it there because I didn't want it sliding around on the back shelf and didn't want to glue it in place. Another bonus is that you don't see it (unless your windows are tinted). Also wanted to avoid placing anything directly on the paint.
On a side note, my cousin had her Sirius "professionally" installed. They placed the antenna on the outside of her 9-3 directly above the front windshield dead center! About the ugliest place you could put it!
