Now easy jumping right to internal faults making the shifter stiff....
Changing the oil definitely won't hurt, but the shift linkage on your 6-speed is a pair of push-pull cables, if the cables get dry they will have more friction, and the shifter will feel sort of gummy and hard to move, won't snap right back to the Neutral gate at center, etc.
It's much easier to get to the linkage on the engine side with the battery and battery tray removed, it sits right on top of the transmission - you could try lubricating the ends of the cables where you can see them with some penetrating oil, work the shifter through the gears, and then maybe a little bit of heavier oil on the exposed bits after the penetrant has worked it's way in? You could use ATF too.
Could be getting stiff on the inside inside the center console too, could try lubing the whole pivot mechanism with white lithium grease, but I don't think you can get to very much of it without taking the whole center cluster apart, haven't had enough of them to remember off the top of my head.
