The problem might lie with the shop or with you in a case like this because if a customer calls around checking for the best price and one shop that knows what could be good to replace at the same time gives out a price of $1200-1500.00 and the other shop that gives out the barebone no frills price of $700.00-800.00, they are both right in away and both wrong.

It might be a bait and switch scenario or the shop is not up to snuff on their Saab's and neither of the options are perfect. $680.00 is a tad on the low side though to begin with and they should know that other things might come into play when starting the work.

Sport Sedan is the main name of this car model and Linear, Arc and Aero are just model names of the Sport Sedan depending on what engine (4 or 6 cyl) and option package it comes with.

So, since it is established that you have a 4 cyl engine it is the same engine as the Linear and Arc model (I think all 06 Aero came with the V6 engine).

It is still a lot of work changing the water pump and things can go wrong if they don't have the special tool and still, the special tool is not that great all the time either.
And yes, it could be a good idea to change the thermostat at this time since we see them go bad here and there and the thermostat housing has to be loosened anyway to get the pump out.
And yes, if they end up having to remove the front engine cover due to that the special tool didn't work, it might be a good idea to change out the serpentine belt and tensioner since we now start to see the tensioner creating a chattering noise when starting cold.

So did you pick the shop because they had the cheapest price to begin with? How many miles does the car have?
