The first step would be to check the level of R134a freon in the system. If the charge drops to low it shuts off the compressor.
This is best done by a shop working with A/C systems since it can be hazardous if you are not familiar with it.
It only takes a little sharp pebble flying up from the car in front to puncture the A/C condenser to let the charge of R134a escape.
