I am continually being plagued with code P0496 on my '06 Aero. Each time, I unscrew and tighten down the gas cap and extinguish the code. It stays away for awhile but then comes back on.

The gas cap was replaced 2 years ago with the upgraded version under warranty. Could this "new" one be faulty now? It doesn't seem to be very tight when being screwed down so maybe the gasket is shot? Can it be replaced with a generic brand?

I read a thread where it was mentioned that it could be the EVAP purge valve. I am thinking more that it might be this since the car does exhibit hesitation during idle when tank is more than 1/2 full, black sooty tail pipes, black smoke from exhaust when re-fueling and engine is running, as well as difficulty re-starting engine if turning it off when re-fueling.

What I have noticed is that when the CEL comes on due to this code the car seems to perform much better. Faster acceleration, more power, quicker throttle response. Could this be true? If so is there harm in leaving the CEL on and not correcting the problem?

Also, if the EVAP purge valve does need replacement, can I use the Caddy one from Rock Auto (as I read in another thread) or must it be a genuine Saab part?
