I can't help with your direct question, as I never experienced any problems starting the programming, just the final step.
I had already started composing the following, when I realized I was ahead of you. FWIW:
I couldn't get the Homelink to work on my '04 or '07, having tried everything I could in the instructions, Homelink's website and Overhead Door Co's website (opener made by Genie). Those remotes have two different frequencies, tried both. Finally called Homelink, and although very helpful and walked me through the steps. Get to final step, and still couldn't sync. She recommended trying the remote, exterior wall-mounted opener, success. Just something about those car remotes...
Does the compass display in the mirror, i.e., you do have power going to the mirror?
If the dealer can't get it to start blinking, easy fix, have them replace mirror. Mine were used, but if brand new, I would expect the dealer to even program the mirror to the remote. Or at least try once. I wouldn't expect them to follow me home and sync with the opener
good luck
