If a warranty item is claimed involving the engine, one has to be able to prove timely oil changes with the proper version of Mobil 1 (not necessarily the bottle on the shelf of Walmart). While Magnusson Moss Act would protect you from having to have dealer records, business records with dates and mileages and specification of the particular oil used from another commercial mechanic will probably be a honored if they pass scrutiny.
Your own records allegation of having done oil changes properly on particular dates and mileages has often been rejected by car manufacturers. In court, such statements are challenged as "self serving." GM, during the sludge warranty claims business on the NG9-3 unlimited eight year warranty turned down people who had missed a single oil change or who claimed they performed their own service.
Yes, you can get your hands dirty, and hopefully have the skills to do it right. And, one can pillory all mechanics, at dealers and elsewhere, for the sins of a couple of them -- after all, they are the only ones hung out to dry on the Internet, if one can believe the customer who had the bad judgment to select them and then judge them. It boils down to a credibility problem when and if you have a problem.
Personally, I'd have a pro do the changes until the warranty period (including the drive train warranty) has expired so that I have the impeccable proof of commercial business records.
YMMV.
