Can't replace driver's side high beam

I need serious help reinstalling the driver's side hi-beam. Easy to take out but it won't go back in. The surrounding bits have all been removed - air intake, battery cover, windshield fluid pipe and small fuse holder in front of battery. No matter what I do I can't get the bulb socket to catch and lock despite hours of attempts. For what it's worth I've replaced all the other bulbs, no problem.
Please, I don't want to remove the front bumpers. The socket came out in literally a few seconds. How does it catch and lock on the way back in?
2004 9-3 106,000 miles.
