Hope not... Picking up a new 2011 9-3 on Sat! Was too good of a deal to pass up, and couldn't let what could possibly be my last chance to pick up a new saab go by.
Insofar as parts, well, I went with the 9-3 due to the car not having major changes since 08 when saab was under gm rule. Even if Saab Parts AB collapsed (unlikely), im banking on the legal obligation from GM to maintain parts availability for cars produced during their reign. By all accounts, this current parts issue is driven by the bankruptcy courts and out of GMs control, so once this passes, they won't have an excuse.
Insofar as service, we have very limited options around where I live. However, I'm one of those guys who does as much of his own stuff as possible, and have been doing research on what it takes to diagnose a 9-3. A Tech2 can be found on ebay for between $900 and $1800 depending on whether or not you trust the Chinese versions and their ability to access Tis2web. Tis2web can be rented hourly from Saab Parts... A bit worried that this option might go away, but have been hearing rumblings about GlobalTIS which is a standalone version of Tis2web which could potentially be an option if one can get an activated copy.
Insofar as reliability, Saabs have a come a long way over the past decade Insofar as reliability. My 9-5 has needed hardly anything outside of the norm besides a belt tensioner since I've had it. Had one check engine due to the well documented PCV pipe cracking issues, but was a $40 part and 30 min under the car to fix. I'm hoping the 93 will be the same or better reliability.
So, taking all this in to account, picking up a new 9-3 which I fully intending on keeping forever (so residuals don't really matter to me) seemed to be a good idea. I hope this helps!
