Just to provide a bit more insight...
Insofar as the Saab engine range offered in the past decade or so, the only big problems have been with the 2.0/2.3 in the original 9-3 / 9-5 with sludge (which can be avoided if one does the PCV upgrades, uses the good synthetic 0W40 oil, and changes it every 5k). The V6 offered in the 9-5 in the years past was a good engine - just a bit, well, high maintenance with the timing belts needing changing every 45 or 60k (I forget). Oh yeah, how could I forget that the '99 2.0L had the infamous head bolt issue...
The 2.0 in the 2003+ 9-3SS (and the new 9-5, I suspect) is as GM an engine as you'll find in the Saab range (aside from the 2.8T used in the 2006+ 9-3's and 2010 9-5 Aeros). If you're looking for something less GM, i'd stick with the B205 and B235 engines found in the OG9-5's and OG9-3's. After they figured out the PCV system, they turned out to be pretty stout performers. Plus, they're legacy Saab.
However, I'd say any engine put in a Saab for sale in the US in the past decade is pretty good. I've had one of each 4 cylinder, and to be honest, I got no complaints on any of them. (although, I have to admit the head bolt issue on the 9-3 was a real stupid quality problem - would love to hear the story on that from a Troll sometime.)
