2011 Mechanical Key Problem (and resolution!) Posted by Tulsaab [Email] (#31) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Tulsaab) on Sat, 25 Feb 2012 14:56:24 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
A few of you may remember me picking up a 2011 9-3 Aero last month... fantastic car, but noticed that the mechanical key wouldn't turn the lock. I tried both keys, and even some silicone lubricant, but no joy. I also spoke with friend of mine who has a 2011, and found out he had the exact same problem (only he found out after locking his keys in the car while the car was running.) Furthermore, there are reports that other cars have had this problem too.
After calling the dealer I bought it from (Int'l Motors in Falls Church, VA), they were awesome - first, they sent me a new key to my key code, and when that didn't work, they sent me a new key cylinder with two new keys. Can't say enough about those guys - truly top notch.
So this morning I attempted to fix the problem - pulled off the door panel, removed the moisture barrier, and was shocked to find that the key assembly was completely different than the one in the WIS. So, in lieu of spending a while trying to figure out how to get the old handle and cylinder out, I decided to first just wiggle the rod connecting the mechanical key assembly to the door lock. Moved it up and down a bit, and then tried my key. Sure enough, whatever I did unseized the lock, and now all of my keys work.
So, all you 2011 owners - go out and test your mechanical key. If it doesn't work, then you might want to pull the panel and wiggle it free. Or, you can wait a few weeks and hopefully Zee Germans will pay for the hour of labor it would take for a dealer to do it. :)
