The radio IS the car, with different parts strewn all over the interior, interconnected with a fiber optic bus. The control unit on the dash is just that, a control unit that sends control signals over the car bus to the other components. The RF portion of the radio is either buried in the dash or in the trunk (not sure), the SID on top of the dash shows the station, one of the audio amplifiers is under the front seat, and an optional amplifier is in the trunk.
Theoretically, you could recreate the car's electical system on a workbench, but it is easier to just test the parts in the car. If you are trying to figure out why your radio is not working, you will have to do it in the car. If you want add more speakers and an external amplifier for them, some people have done that with varying degrees of success. Do a search on that subject.
