AFAIK, most gasoline sold in Northern and Central New Jersey is sourced from Conoco-Phillips' Linden terminal - which is supplied via pipeline (for the most part). Each big name brand (and all the generics) have no real choice but to purchase gasoline from Conoco-Phillips. Each brand then adds to the generic gasoline their own blend of detergents and whatever additives to turn that generic CP gas into a brandable product - which is then distributed to stations. Branded gasoline adds about a penny a gallon to the retailer. Sunoco operates their own refinery near Phili, so in all likelihood their gasoline sold in NJ was refined by Sunoco itself, and not purchased from CP. But do you think Citgo, Shell, Exxon, Getty have their own refineries around here? Nope - it all comes from Conoco Phillips. So when you pay 20 cents more for Exxon compared to the Getty across the street, you can convince yourself that you are buying something super special - but for the additives, it really is the same stuff.
