Does your A/C compressor kick in or recycle at all when you presses the A/C Button? Check and see if the 2nd electric fan running when you turn on the A/C. Also check the relay and see if that's shot as well. If the A/C does not engaged when your press the button, that means you're low on your freon. If your high side pressure is high, your A/C might not functioning as well.
Did the shop evacuate and refill the freon for you? If your system is leaking, the shop responsibility to collect the freon from your system so that it doesn't pollute the environment. At this point, you might not have any freon in the system. If they diagnosed that you need a new compressor, your system pressure might still be intact.
I would definitely check the relay or low pressure side to see if you're low in freon or not and go from there. You can check the low side pressure with a cheap gauge that you can find at any local parts store.
Let us know.
