I bought a set of Vredestein QuaTrac-3 tires for my wife's 9-3SC four years ago. I measured the tread depth last fall/winter and noted 6/32 on all tires. Comparing depth to amount of wear over the previous three years told me her car would need new tires this fall.
Today was the second time in a month that I found one tire dangerously low on air. First time I thought it might be a fluke and I kept watching the tire pressure during our long East Coast driving vacation with no apparent loss. Having it happen again today told me it was no fluke.
I went to Discount Tire expecting a plug and patch only but was shocked to learn one tire had only 2/32 of tread and was down to the wear bars. This was not the leaky tire either.
So my choices were: Plug and patch only, followed by ordering a set of new Vredesteins, then drive 80 miles to the closest store of the Michigan tire store chain that carries them for installation; or purchase a high quality something from Discount.
Pirelli P7s currently have a double $70 rebate on a set of four so those are what her car is now wearing. I hated the P6s that came on her car from the factory 7 years ago, but the new P6 tires installed on my 9-5 Aero just before I bought it 18 months ago have been fine. The salesman knew all of the bad points regarding the old P6 tires and said the P7s exhibit none of these faults. Time will tell.
