No the vents did not come apart on me. One tiny scratch on the left vent, however I'm not sure if that wasn't there already. Center vent came out without any damage. Frankly I'm shocked I could accomplish this. The tools suggested by B Millar really did the trick - no damage at all. Can't believe it after all that pushing and tugging to push/pry the clips on the vents.
One thing I did do is searched the internet before hand and looked up every way to remove the center vent. Did find a post on putting the vents back together so I was ready for that. To be honest I think the driver side is the hardest because there is no give in the dash plate to pry the tool in side to unlock the clips.
