The study I ran on the 9-5 BB showed a mean value in the 140 to 150 range, but with a large standard deviation. The mean minus one sigma point was in the 115K range ... BUT the distribution was far from gaussian (bell-shaped). It was more like a barbell, with a cluster of lives in the 100K range and a cluster in the 175K-200K range, and the rest scattered about. Maybe my sample size was way too small, but there were 40 to 50 responses.
I chose the path you are considering - replaced mine at around 115K. BUT it is a lot more reasonably done on the pre-Dame Edna 9-5s. There is a hatch door in the rear floor for access, so you don't need to drop the tank, as in the 9-3. The fuel filter is external, so you aren't dealing with that. In the 9-3 the filter is part of the pump assembly. Pump cartridges are readily available, easy to install, and reasonably priced, so you aren't paying a lot extra for a plastic cage. And after the shop was done with the pump, the "reads empty when full" syndrome was gone - I guess they knocked off whatever was interfering with the sender.
