They can be a bit crunchy... Posted by Tulsaab [Email] (#31) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Tulsaab) on Mon, 23 Dec 2013 09:09:55 In Reply to: How poor are gearboxes?, Philip Schall, Sun, 22 Dec 2013 19:48:39 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I have a 2011 9-3 6sp XWD which I bought new back in 1/12. I love the car, but have to agree with the quote you provided - after coming from a '99 9-3 (5m) and a '03 Mazda Protege5 (5m), I was initially really disappointed in the gearbox in my new 9-3. To rectify, I used a lot of the GenuineSaab.com items (shifter linkage, shifter housing bushings, short shifter) which really helped the shifter feel much more direct, but it does still crunch from time to time. The strangest thing is that some days (typically when it's warmer out), it'll shift almost Mazda good for the entire route. Then, when I get back in the car to drive it somewhere else, it's crunchy again... I'd say it's gotten signficantly better (or i've gotten more used to it) over the past 25k miles, but yeah, the F40 gearboxes definitely weren't either designed or manufactured with performance in mind. On a side note, a friend of mine picked up an '07 9-3 Aero 6sp last week with 50K, and the first thing she asked me was "do you think there's something wrong with my gearbox? It's really tough to shift from 1st to 2nd..."
For additional reading, google Pontiac G6 F40 or HHR SS F40...same gearbox, similar opinions...
