You have to turn the volume on the MP3 source all the way up.
I assume your '08 unit is the same as my '07. I does NOT give any "recognition" of the auxiliary source, other than just displaying "AUX", which it will do whether or not it actually has a signal.
Both my son and daughter are using FM-modulator / Bluetooth adapters in their 2005's. They like them. The GOgroove SMARTmini BT fits in the 9-5 without interfering with their automatic gear selector. I don't know about the 9-3.
