Wipers lifting off the glass

This morning, as I cleared the snow off my 03 9-3, I noticed that the wipers floated off the glass for a few sweeps before they returned downwards to make contact with the windshield. I had not lifted the wipers manually prior to cleaning the car, so I didn't leave them up. Never saw that happen before. Any ideas what caused this?
