Front end steering clunk... another post

Hey Everyone:
I reached older posts and discovered some literature on front end clunking. Not to be ad nauseam, but here are my girl's symptoms.
I get a clunking sound when turning the wheel only from the straight position to either side (if wheel is turned all the way to either side, I get no clunking until passing straight). It is worse in cold weather but now she purrs year round. This has been happening for going on two years. Interestingly enough, when the car is up on the racks, no noise. It only occurs with weight.
My mechanic said everything still was fitting tight and she was ok to maintain the status quo. However, it's kind of annoying. So, anyone have any ideas? Strut bearing? Strut mount? Tie rod? Ball joint?
Oh yea, the noise is worse, if not exclusively on the drivers side. The car has 297k and I've never touched the suspension. My mechanic was quite amazed and actually the tire wear is still perfectly level so he said to go with it (I'm cheap). I think back to a quote from Anders I enjoyed, he stated I have a 'deferred maintenance schedule' which I cannot contest.
So, if anyone has dealt with this I'd appreciate advice. The girl is beginning to float so new struts and shocks are on the docket. My question is, is it those or could it be the steering, maybe a gear wearing out in the rack? I'll table the query and thanks in advance for your opinion.
Best,
BenR
