My car isn't exactly what you specify, but it is close enough to answer your questions. I drive a 2008 9-3 2.0 Sportcombi (not AWD), now about 80k miles. My third Saab. I really like this car.
I get 30+ mpg highway (32+ if you drive gently). It is a joy for highway driving, rock solid/comfortable.
It won't have all the Saaby charm of your 900, but it will be more reliable. A lot, I suspect. I bought mine used 2 years ago. No repairs at all thus far. OK, the windshield washer blade self destructed. That's it.
It will likely cost less to keep 150k plus miles than a 900.
Re mechanics, it is still a Saab. But the systems are more normal/less odd. It is simply more GM (for better or worse). I have a mechanic who is a general "foreign car" shop. He isn't scared of Saabs. I really haven't had to see him lately though. I brought him the car when I bought it. He did the 60k service recommendations. Since then, just oil changes. We had more regular visits taking care of my 1999 9-3.
I really like my Saab Sportcombi.
