2008 Aero V6 : intermittent no crank Posted by magalar [Email] (#1325) [Profile/Gallery] (more from magalar) on Wed, 27 Nov 2019 18:18:59 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hi everyone,
I'm back on this board after a few months of silence. Two reasons: car is reliable as an anvil, and I bought a new track toy (an NA Miata).
Anyway, the Saab didn't crank 2 times in the last month. Tonight, after leaving the car alone for an hour, it restared normally after refusing to crank while parked in the street.
The symptoms: for a few months now, the steering lock relay is erratic. Sometimes it clicks (unlocks the steering) on the first insertion of the key in the ignition, sometimes it takes a second attempt. Now, since a couple weeks, the relay sometimes doesn't want to lock the steering column.
Also, once in a while, a bunch of warning lights/messages appears: ABS, ESP and XWD failure. And after a minute or so, "Dynamic headlights failure". Usually, at the next restart, everything is fine except for a U0212 that clears after a day or two.
So since my indie (Carmine of Sylcar) is retired now, I did some proactive maintenance: replaced the ignition switch (ISM) with a new repair kit and replaced the battery even if the old one was not that old (42 months). These did not cure the problem as tonight no-crank event proved...
So, before forking big money to "maybe" solve the problem, what are the usual suspects? Could it be a ground wire or a positive wire connection that is flaky? Some guy on the other forum had this exact problem ("The problem was a bad connection in the positive side battery cable").
Anyway, any tip is welcome. I'll have an Autel full scanner here tomorrow to help with the diagnotics, if it can help.
Mileage is around 90 000 miles. Car is an Aero V6T XWD 2008 manual.
