I have 2 sons in college (in different states). One son has a basic 91 Honda Civic with a 4 speed manual transmission, hatchback. It has 130,000 challenging miles since this car was initially purchased as a learning laboratory for new drivers. I insisted that my sons learn to drive a manual transmission and found an underpowered front driver to be excellent for learning car control, anticipation, etc. One son spun it off a dirt, correction, mud, road when we lived in Alabama, and the other experienced a large moving van pivoting around the front end of the car. We repaired it and the car still runs strong, and is perfect for a percussion performance major living in Texas. The other son drives our 92 Acura Integra GSR, also a hatchback. It has 160,000 miles on it to include 35000 miles of autobahn when we lived in Germany, plus several laps at the Nurburgring. Now it enjoys Atlanta traffic. Both cars are reliable and doing what they need to do. Saab or Honda? I love my 9-3 but it is expensive to maintain. Does your son work on cars? My son with the Integra is an engineering major, and loves to work on cars. The Saab would be no problem for him. The other son can work on cars, but I consider it lucky for him to wash the Honda every now and again. So I would not recommend the Saab for him. Frankly I would invest in a good driving school such as Skip Barber if you care about safety. I'm not sure how you measure avoiding accidents, but the schools help in understanding accident avoidance. However, I like Saab's approach to safety, efficiency and performance, even though I've owned several Honda/Acuras.
