Smoking DI Cassettes?!?!?!?

My friends 2000 Viggen just shut down in the middle on highway. He opened the hood and there was smoke coming from the harness where the DI Plug meets the DI Cassette.
The car has 35k on it, and of heard of DI dying young, but smoke? The only thing I can think off is that Viggens need very specific spark plugs, and I know the wrong ones could cause improper running....could using a now resistor plug cause the thing to short out? The whole cassetter and connection wire need to be replaced as the two melted together. Is there anything else that could cause that?
