Two cars in my garage: 1999 9-5 lpt with 125,000KM and a 1996 Volvo 850 (N/A) 200,000 KM (I've had the Volvo since new and the SAAB I purchased dealer certified 3 years ago with 60,000KM).
The Volvo is now 9.5 years old and has served me well: Things that have gone wrong: A/C, Exhaust manifold, stab links from time to time and most recently a ball joint and a wheel bearing. The rest is wear and tear..
The SAAB had just recently had the SID replaced (first time), new turbo, battery, broken CV Joint, rusted muffler. Previous owner had the display for climate control replaced and the air conditioning system. The DI is original and the engine runs beautifully with no oil consumption compared to the Volvo which consumes about 1 bottle between oil changes (has done it since day one and never got worse).
The volvo is a sportier ride: it handles better due to less body roll, stiffer suspension and heavier steering with good road feel. The SAAB is faster, softer ride, quieter and generally more refined and luxurious. Both have extremely comfortable and roomy interiors with the Volvo more efficient in maximizing interior space given its slightly smaller dimensions. To sum it up the Volvo is an excellent design but it clearly shows that it was conceived a generation before the SAAB with respect to its lack of refinement, technology and equipment.
