Tape rewind means radio is off?

Maybe a stupid question, but my 2001 9-5 base (standard stereo -- single cd, tape, am/fm) does not allow me to listen to anything else while a cassette tape is rewinding or fast-forwarding. I've read the manual, and I don't see any way around this. I wind up sitting through alot of dead air while waiting for tapes to rewind, which I'd much rather fill with music in the interim. Can anyone tell me if I'm right, or (hopefully) that I'm wrong and show me what I'm doing wrong?
