A high voltage level would be due to the alternator/voltage regulator. When measuring the voltage at the battery, you want to do it with the engine running. The reason to do it at the battery is that it is very easy to get to.
High voltage can destroy the battery, because it literally cooks the electrolyte out of it. But 95K + miles is pretty good for a battery, so that may not be it.
