The other thing to consider is driving in the snow. Aeros with 17" wheels make driving in the snow a tough and scary task, although I bet there are all-season tires on these now (my '02 came with only summer tires), and that would be a help. Ask the dealer about this -- it's important if you'll be driving in the snow. If the Aero comes with summer tires, you really can't drive those during the winter -- the tread turns into a slick for intense and purpose. The Arc would be better in the snow ultimately (16" are better for snow and they feature all-season tires) unless you install snow tires on the Aero (Saab offers a wheel/snow tire package for about $800 and change), and then you'll be in better shape than most SUVs. Tire storage may be an issue, though, if you're in the city proper.
I think even the Aero will be more comfortable than your departing 9-3. The chassis/suspension can't even be compared -- you'll be riding in real comfort in either the Arc or Aero.
