First, I've never seen a problem with the oil pump gears failing. Low oil pressure always seems to be due to sludge/pickup problems, or the pressure relief spring. But the pump and housing is pretty bulletproof.
As to a T-adapter, it may not be necessary. I haven't put an oil pressure gauge in for a few years, but when I last did it, I got an oil pressure sender that had both a gauge output AND an idiot light output. It's a common request, and the market fills it. Every idiot light I know of is just a switch to ground, and they all tend to be in the same 7-10 psi range. So where ever you are getting the gauge set, see if they also sell a combo unit. And then get dimensions to make sure it'll fit.
