Gary: Your technical explanation makes good scientific sense to me, but I just doubt the practical side of it,simply because I feel that with average carefull break in policies, coupled with frequent oil and filter changes, the engine in my Saab will no doubt outlast the rest of the car anyway. It is likely that my engine will last 250,000 miles without a major overhaul. By that time, I will have bought two to three new Saabs, simply because other stuff wears out or becomes technologically obsolete.
If you were putting together a racing engine, where the stress levels that it is subjected to are almost 100% of it's capacity, then I would totally agree with you, and in fact, all racing engines are usually subjected to a dyno run or two, after which they are allowed to cool, and then major components are re torqued.
For me, it gets back to the question of whether or not this advice is relevant to everyday engines in everyday cars. Personally, I'm more concerned with frequent 3,000 mile O&F changes to remove the contaminants and coke deposits that are in oil that has been subjected to high temperatures form the turbocharger.
I ran this question by my airplane mechanic prior to writing this, and he agrees with you as far as high stress applications,ie: racing.
By the way, are you aware that the current four cylinder Saab engine and internals started life as a racing design by Triumph?
