I've had my 9-5 Aero 5 speed for about 10 days and I can't believe what a great car it is! I'm a former BMW snob (I've owned 4 of them) and the 9-5 Aero is great. As a little background, I was forced to sell my last car--a 2001 BMW 330 convertible because it was too small and the seats were killing my back. (I also don't think that the current 3 series is up to overall BMW standards.) Under the circumstances, negative equity and all, I figured that the Saab, with its steep discounts was the best I could do. But, man, I had no idea that I'd like the 9-5 as much as I do. What a great surprise!
Of the BMW's I've owned, the 98 528i is most comparable to the 9-5...The 528i is a great car. It's a bit quieter, and more solid on the freeway (if you can believe that), the completely neutral rear-wheel-drive handling is wonderful, and the shift linkage is tops. BUT the 9-5 is MUCH faster, more "tossable," has a better stereo, has more comfortable seats and a much cooler interior (the 5's is a bit stodgy, i think). As fun as the BMW was to drive, the 9-5 Aero is more fun--IMO. It has more personality. I could go on and on comparing the two vehicles, but at this point I love my Saab and am very pleasantly surprised at how favorably it compares to what many BMW enthusiasts consider the best car BMW has ever made (the 5 series, generally, that is).
