I have both a '99 9-5 wagon and the '01 9-3SE (wife's). Here are my thoughts:
- If you have the bucks, go for the 9-5. The 9-5 is more refined in all the interior detail.
- If you want more HP, go for the 9-3 SE as it has 205 HP? vs. 185 HP on the 9-5 2.3.
- If you want fun on the base 9-5, get the manual. Not being an automatic snob or anything but I always found manuals to be way more fun.
- Regarding the wagon and soccer mom thing, I want utility and the wagon offers that. A sedan will run you a couple of bucks cheaper and should be the choice if you use the minivan to haul stuff.
- In summary, if I had to do it all over again, I would get the 9-5 wagon (Aero if I have the bucks) with SE amenties (which I did in the '99).
