Mark,
Like so many items in the wacky world of consumerama, the remote key tends not to work as designed for battery replacement. There's a little plastic clip on the detachable back that locks on the main key. Pushing into the little hole with a paper clip or small awl is supposed to push that clip far enough to allow the removable back piece to come off. Perhaps Saab technicians can do it, but most of us can't.
The procedure requires a four-handed alien. Or something like a vise to hold the key. Push into the hole with the awl to move the clip a little, then (while doing that and keeping up the amount of pressure) take a small jeweler's screwdriver, dig it into the seam where the back piece fits into the main key body above the hole, and VERY CAREFULLY and SLOWLY pry off the back section of the key.
If you have no vise and only two hands, skip the hole and go right to the careful prying.
If you're lucky, the back will pop right off. Voila! Then you can change the battery, refit the back piece into its "hinges," and push it on until it locks with a click.
If you're NOT lucky when you pry, the little plastic clip (which is an injection molded part of the removable back piece) will break off, which dumps you right into black electric tape land.
And know in advance that you can't go to the nearest drugstore to find replacement batteries. Oh no. Gotta order them online as SG stated. eBay works, but you can also google "CR1632" and find other relatively cheap sources.
After changing batteries, you know about "re-activating" your key and mating it again to the 9-5's receiver, right? I forget the exact procedure, but it's something like pressing open on the remote three times in five seconds. Your car will then flash the parking lights, sound the horn, play an Irish jig, do a little dance, and tell you how happy it is.
Good thing we don't have to change the key remote batteries very often. Just often enough to forget how to do it, misplace the extra batteries we bought, and come back to board for help. LOL.
