Hi,
I clean the engine on my 9-5 all the time. I have done this on many, many cars over the last 30 years. I use Gunk (non-foamy) then simple green. I use a paint brush to do the scrubbing and I get the fenders and firewall too. I have never had a problem with the 9-5.
The only car that I ever had trouble with is my mom's 97 540i. Evidently they have the computer exposed under the hood. The car took two days to dry out.
Drive Safe,
Joe
