There is an adjustment; if I remember my 9-5 WIS, it's basically the same as the later NG900/9-3, and the procedure is covered over there. Lock trans in 4th, loosen bolt at firewall, shifter in 4th, tighten, voila.
If the shifter is still firm but just off, that points to alignment. If it's actually significantly loose (lots of play), that points to something popped out (could be simple, the linkage has several little ball joints in it).
