I picked the 2.3t in our recent 2001 wagon purchase because crash safety concerns. IIHS (iihs.org) was not all that impressed in their crash test with the 2001 SE, due to intrusion near the driver's right foot. Of course, one can argue that in any severe crash, the driver's right foot should be on the brake pedal, thereby avoiding the intrusion that occurred during the IIHS test. I played safe and picked the engine that makes the engine bay less cramped, therefore hopefully leaving more room for the crumple zone. In the 2002 model year, SAAB is adding one inch to the bumper, probably in a move to attain better IIHS ratings in case they pick the V6 SE for testing again. I guess the 2001 9-5 was probably designed with the 4 cylinder in mind.

Regarding turbo delay in the base model automatic on take-off, IMHO, it's not due to turbo delay, but the programming of the automatic transmission. Unless you press the sport mode button, the automatic functions like the Mercedes 300TE I drove in the past: it starts off in 2nd gear by default, unless you floor the gas pedal. 9-5 is drive-by-wire, so the same gas pedal position is interpretted differently by the car, depending on whether it is in sport mode. Sport mode will force the automatic to use first gear on take-off.

BWDIK,
Jim
