Diagnosing and treating sludging

I have been following JMJ in NC's saga with a 38k Miles aero which was sludged up to the point of sudden major engine damage, despite a mostly good maint history and that low mileage.
Im more than a little concerned.
Our aero is similar, low miles/short trips, 6 years old 40k on the clock, and although its been well looked after I cant produce a record of oil changes every 5k miles, because once the free services/warranty was up I did them myself a couple of times, so I wouldnt hold out much hope of getting saab to pay for any repair.
Is there a simple not too invasive test for sludging, and if it proves positive, what are my options, is oil flushing adequate, or does the sump need dropping and a proper cleanout done, does the cam cover need doing too?. What kind of hours does this take.
Dropping a few hundred at my indie for peace of mind isnt an issue here, much preferred to the expense and hassle of a new engine.
