My wife's 2002 9-3 Linear with A/T and the Launch package was off lease in August 2005 and we couldn't come within $100 of her old payment on a 2005 Arc. Both were GM Supplier quotes, and the main difference was in the lease money factor. The 2002 had several thousand in incentives plus a triple zero money factor. The stars didn't line up that way in Aug 2005, so she ended up in a 2005 Infiniti G35 for a $750 drive off and $417 a month for 36 mo 12k miles - a total cost of $15,345. The best Saab quote was $1,188 drive off and $519 a month, or a total of $19,338. A three-year difference of about $4,000. We love Saabs -- we've had eight of them since 1983 -- but that price differential was impossible to overlook.
Of course, some (but by no means all) of the money we saved is spent at the gas pump - the G35 averages about 14mpg in hilly L.A. suburban driving. Her linear averaged more like 18. The difference between 14 and 18 at California gas prices works out to roughly $500 more per 10k miles driven.
Our next chance to do the math will be in the summer of 2008, when her Infiniti lease is up and the CPO warranty on my 2002 9-3SE will be running out.
