I know the 3.0L V6 in the Saab is a corporate GM engine. Google searches tell me it's the same 3.0L as used in the Saturn LS and Cadillac Catera. * Yep, all Ecotec V6s (used in Saab, Opel, Holden, Saturn, Cadillac etc.) made in the UK at the Ellesmere Port plant.
I'm looking for specs on this engine:
Bore, stroke, *86/85mm
block/head material, * iron/aluminum
V-degrees, compression ratio, *54 degrees, 9.5:1
and any other info that may be interesting about this engine. How is it's long-term reliability? *No indication of any problems so far, some owners approaching 100k mi. Some criticize the timing belt, but ignore its 60k mi replacement interval and Saab's paying for the first one. Simply not an issue.
Common problems? Any interesting design quirks? *Asymetric turbo quirky enough? The direct ignition and Trionic systems are industry leading.
Also, this engine produces 200HP in the Saab 9-5 with a low pressure turbo. What is the max pressure of this turbo? *Don't know, but it's telling that it isn't fitted with a wastegate (it's a tiny turbo, and spools up very quickly). Early models didn't even have a boost guage.
Why bother with a low pressure turbo when the engine produces 200HP already in the Catera? *229 lb-ft at only 2100 rpm.
What is the minimum fuel octane recommended for the 3.0L LPT? *91
What was done to get the additional 200HP in the Catera WITHOUT a turbo? *horsepower's easier to obtain and less important than torque, especially useable torque.
Has anyone modded the 3.0L V6 turbocharger to produce more boost? Are there any mods for the 3.0L V6 in general? *IIRC Swedish Dynamics is the only aftermarket company offering a replacement T7 module and freeflow exhaust, significantly increasing torque and hp. Don't know of anyone who's tried one.
R&T test results: 0-60: 7.4 sec, 1/4 mile: 15.7 sec. @89.1.
As has been noted, the automatic is made by Aisin Warner. The manuals available w/ the I4s are made by Saab.
