The problem with the test is this: you can't predict the weather! Well, at least not well enough...
My friend who did it with me last year but had already mounted his snows reported yesterday that his summer tires were truly frightening. I'm not sure how long we can wait, especially with the 900 dead and the Alfa in storage. We both want to do it but finding the time is difficult. Ideally, we'd like to wait until we get a little packed snow, a bit colder and then a new significant snow over it. AND, we want it on a Saturday! I have another friend with a C900 that might be interested in my spare set of blizzak MZ-02's and has expressed interest in coming. All in all, we're hoping for 3 people (with tires to switch on the spot), maybe more.
Last year we used the 3M lot over near Sun Ray on 94 east of St. Paul. They didn't bother us but then it was only one car. If we show up with 3 (or more) cars and unload floor jacks and sets of tires/wheels, they might get, um, curious. I can only imagine how much attention we'd draw if we set up some cones too, as we've been thinking.... Suggestions as to a local parking lot that isn't really used much (so the snow cover is consistent) and won't bother us during off hours some afternoon would be very welcome.
I'd kind of like to video tape it and then digitize the whole event.
Driving on the pilots a few days leaves me appreciating the snows SO much more! Of course, similarly, my head feels so much better when I stopping beating it against the monitor and cursing Hummingbird software... Hmmmm...I should stop now.
Anyway, I'll let you know.
