> A bit too emotional...

When it comes to Saab, I AM very emotional!

>..but lacking in some facts. Although I personally prefer the four in my Saab's, to say that one is a Saab engine and one is not, as well as to say that "rubberband" drive is no good and chain is, is a huge oversimplification of the question.

Not really! Fact is, that the V6 is an Opel (GM) design, which Saab has made very few changes too. I know the 4-cyl is an old english Triumph-design, but it was still build from scratch and has be refined through the last 20 years! Opel has newer build the greatest engines and is gonna benefit a lot from Saab. I think it's great that Saab in the US changes the drivebelt after 60k miles - good for you! Makes me think that they realize it's a problem when Saab engines (4-cyl) usually runs 200-300,000 miles without getting the chains replaced (nor serviced)! I live in Denmark - neighbour country to Sweden, for those who didn't know - here, we don't get free belt-changes from Saab!

>Why single Saab out as an example...

Well, the top of the pops here in Europe, meaning Saab, Volvo, Merc, BMW, Audi ALL feature chains instead of drivebelts! Why!? For one thing, costs is a big issue, meaning the the Japaneese cars manuf. and the other Europeans have to consider the production-costs. The belt is cheaper and puts more maintainace(costs) over on the consumer/owner, when he has to have the belt changed

>If you had owned a model year 1991 2.3 liter four cylinder Saab, chances >are you might have had a premature timing chain failure. Would you then >criticize timing chains?

Acyually i DO own a -91 2.3 liter!!! I had my CHAIN changed at 150,000 miles. Had the engine had a belt, it would have cost me three times the price in labour and parts, as I would have changed the third belt a 150,000 miles! And as James was asking about reliability, I would have to mention the repair-costs - right!?

Don't get me wrong, I'm gonna own a 9-5 next, but it will be with the old reliable 4-cyl Saab(developed)-engine, which is fast, less fuelconsuming, VERY realiable and VERY longliving......

Cheers!
