Having had (and continue to have) a number of Saabs, I have not experienced excessive battery failure. Having said that, my wife's -04 9-3 linear had its battery replaced under warranty after 18 months. It just went dead on spring night. My 01' Aero still has it's original battery with 85K miles on the clock. My son just replaced the battery in his '01 9-3 before this winter - only because it was getting old. His wife's '99 900S still has the original battery.
I think that if any commonality could be identified it might be the close proximetry of the radiator and turbo discharge piping to the battery. I've noticed that the battery case - and the outer layer of the thermal blanket/case- gets very warm on all of the cars after only a few miles of driving. Perhaps this added heat stresses the battery to the point that the mdeiocre units fail.
