salesperson from NJ called whether I would be interested in a '02 9-5 Aero since I am interested in a 9-5 to replace an aging 9000S my wife has.
Didn't have much time to drive it but the first thing as many mentioned is the dash. Well, it looks like, err, ***PLASTIC***, there is no better way to put it. I know it is aluminium but it LOOKS like one of those cheapo simulated dash from lesser cars.
The front seats are very nice, I have a 9000 Aero, the new 9-5 Aero seats are softer than those for the 9000 Aero. The 9K Aero seats are hard compare to the 9-5 Aero's. I must be getting to the age that I appreciate softer seats and the 9-5 Aero seats are mighty fine.
Now for the ride, the 9-5 is decidedly more refined than the 9K just about everything. The one I drove is an automatic and it's a nice 5-sp auto.
For whatever reason, this Aero did not seem that much faster than a Linear I drove not too long ago. I can't explain why, maybe the computer hasn't adapted to a more agressive style, even in Sport mode. Guess when I have to make a decision, then I would drive all three trims back to back.
Externally, the visual difference is also minimal between an Aero and a Linear. Someone needs to look carefully to see the slightly lowered body, body trim, and the bigger wheels. There was a Linear of the same color in parked next to the Aero. I had to look hard to fine any visual differences.
There is still that 4 banger vibration typical of Saab. Yes, it's a $40K car and I felt the 4 banger engine vibrating through the steering column, something a 4 cylinder Toyota or Honda do not do.
After driving the Aero, I sat in an Arc and see whether I could feel the difference in the seat. Yup, the Aero seat is more supportive and hugs the body better than your regular 9-5 seat.
Will post again when I get the chance to drive all three trims in a day.
